A bobtail fee is a charge imposed by a trucking company for delivering a container to a specific location and then returning later to pick it up.

This fee compensates for the loss of truck utilization during the empty return trips when the truck is not carrying any load. The bobtail fee aims to offset the costs associated with these inefficient trips as opposed to more efficient practices like drop and hook or live loading.
