Bill-of-lading (BOL)

Bill-of-lading (BOL)

A bill of lading (BOL or B/L) is a document provided to the shipper that outlines the method and route of shipment. It serves as a contract, receipt, and proof of ownership for the goods being transported. The bill of lading is essential and must be presented at each stage of the shipment process.

The bill of lading serves as a receipt and proof of ownership for the goods being transported in the following ways:

  1. Receipt: The bill of lading acts as a receipt because it acknowledges that the carrier has received the goods from the shipper for transportation. It serves as evidence that the goods have been handed over to the carrier in good condition and will be delivered to the consignee at the destination.
  2. Proof of Ownership: The bill of lading also serves as proof of ownership because it typically specifies the shipper (consignor) and the consignee. By presenting the bill of lading, the consignee can prove that they are the rightful owner or intended recipient of the goods once they are delivered. This document helps to establish legal ownership and facilitates the transfer of goods from the shipper to the consignee.
